Nail care is an important part of any body care routine. A well-kept set of nails makes a great first impression and requires relatively little effort when compared to other body care routines, like facial care or hair grooming. Plus, with the availability of nail care salons, day spas, and nail care products there is almost no reason to let your nails get out of hand.

However, even the best among us must occasionally get nail repair. There are many reasons for this, including split nails, nail fungi, embrittled nails, and much more. However, it is not the end of the world if you need nail repair as a little patience and expertise go a long way to maintaining your finger and toenails.

Reasons and Treatment for Split Nails

One of the more common reasons for nail repair is split nails, and today you are going to learn how to maintain a split nail. There are many myths about split nails and hopefully, some of them can also be dispelled during this tutorial.

Firstly, let’s look at why nails split down the middle. The most common reason for this is embrittled nails. This means that your nails are too dry, and the lack of moisture causes them to be dry and prone to cracking or splitting.

A broken nail. Lack of vitamins and calcium in the body.

Nails can dry out for a variety of reasons, but some of the more routine reasons are as a result of overapplication of nail polish, or overuse of nail polish remover. Other reasons that nails dry out is overwashing of your hands and poor dietary choices.

Now, if you have a nail that is split down the middle, there are several methods you can use to perform nail repair, but remember, there is no magic solution that will instantly repair the nail. The most important process you can engage in is regular attention and maintenance.

This means that you should start with trimming the nail so that it doesn’t get caught in fabric, and a good option is wrapping the nail to prevent any unnecessary trauma. A couple of times a day you should apply moisturizer or nail-specific creams so that your body has ideal conditions for nail repair.

Now, all that is left to do is keep the nail clean and moisturized. Regularly trim it until the split has fully healed, and from there, practice good preventative maintenance to reduce the likelihood of the nail splitting again.

Preventative Maintenance to Reduce Nail Repair

While it is true that, in our current climate, hand washing is more necessary than ever, it is also important to exercise restraint and good practice. This means that you should limit the amount of handwashing you do, and focus on protecting your hands when you are at risk of contamination of harsh chemicals or substances that may damage your nail.

It is also important to consider your diet as a factor in your overall nail health. Take supplements of key minerals like iron, and make sure you are getting enough B vitamins to keep the production of biotin adequate for healthy nails.
