FDA Warns Consumers About Methanol-Based Hand Sanitizers

What is Happening?

Recently, there has been growing concern about the quality of alcohol-based hand sanitizer products. With the rising need for these products, it appears as though some manufacturers may be using unsafe materials in the manufacturing of their hand sanitation products. Typically, alcohol-based hand sanitizers use ethanol or isopropanol as their active ingredients.

However, on June 19, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised consumers to avoid the use of products manufactured by a Mexico-based company, Eskbiochem SA de CV.

Apparently, through FDA testing, they discovered this company using a third type of alcohol, methanol, as the active ingredient in their products. Since then, the organization has begun compiling a list of additional products and manufacturers found using methanol in their hand sanitation products. The consequences of methanol-based hand sanitizers are severe. 

Why Methanol is Dangerous

Methanol can have long-lasting effects through skin contact and ingestion. Along with the clinical side effects usually associated with ethanol and methanol poisoning: headaches, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of coordination, and decreased level of consciousness, methanol can also cause blindness or death. 

If you believe you have been exposed to methanol-based hand sanitizers, through ingestion or skin contact, speak with your local poison control center and seek immediate medical attention. Similarly, if you feel the side-effects of ethanol or methanol poisoning, seek immediate medical attention.
